Look how you have fallen from the sky O shining one, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O conqueror of the nations! You said to yourself, ‘I will climb up to the sky. Above the stars of El I will set up my throne. I will rule on the mountain of assembly on the remote slopes of Zaphon. I will climb up to the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High! – Isaiah 14:12-14

Although this passage in context is referring to the king of Babylon, many Christians also understand this passage to mirror the fall of Lucifer. We reach this conclusion because in Luke 10:18 Jesus says “I saw satan fall like lightning from heaven.” Jesus goes on further in verse 19 to tell his disciples that He, Jesus, has given authority to His disciples to tread on snakes, scorpions, the full force of the enemy, and that nothing will hurt us. This is all because of the authority that Jesus has given us. Here is where things become interesting. The reason we refer to satan before his humiliation as Lucifer is because the term “Shining One”, and “Son of Dawn” are translated in Latin to Lucifer. The second satan thought himself greater than God, the second he was cast down from heaven, he lost his title. He lost all of his former glory. He lost everything God had given him. It is why the Scriptures now say “satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” in 2 Corinthians 11:14. Before the fall, satan was the Angel of Light. Now, he pretends to be his former self. Jesus, in Revelation 22:16 says “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!” Jesus quite literally calls himself Lucifer. This is where, if you are not theologically grounded, you may make the greatest of follies, and proclaim the most sinister of heresies. For the Pharisees tried to make such a claim, but Jesus put an end to that immediately:
The experts in the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and, “By the ruler of demons he casts out demons!” So he called them and spoke to them in parables: “How can satan cast out satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom will not be able to stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if satan rises against himself and is divided, he is not able to stand and his end has come. But no one is able to enter a strong man’s house and steal his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can thoroughly plunder his house. I tell you the truth, people will be forgiven for all sins, even all the blasphemies they utter. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sin” – Mark 3:22-29
Jesus looked at satan’s failing, and said “I am taking back everything you were, and I am taking it to further humiliate you.” And truly, God has humiliated him. He taunts satan by allowing him to pretend to have dominion on this earth, although they both know that God has the ultimate authority. We know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Light. We also know that by His Blood and Resurrection we have that same death-conquering power. We have that same power to humiliate satan because we have the true morning star living inside us giving us power and because we know that shadows and masquerades cannot stand before the light and power of our wonderful Lord, Jesus Christ.
[Jesus said] “I am the first and the last, and the one who lives! I was dead, but look, now I am alive—forever and ever—and I hold the keys of death and of Hades!”
Then [John] saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to do battle with the one who rode the horse and with his army. Now the beast was seized, and along with him the false prophet who had performed the signs on his behalf—signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. Both of them were thrown alive into the lake of fire burning with sulfur. And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are too, and they will be tormented there day and night forever and ever. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each one was judged according to his deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.
[Jesus] said to [John], “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the one who is thirsty I will give water free of charge from the spring of the water of life. And there will no longer be any curse, and the throne of God and the Lamb will be in the city. His servants will worship him, and they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Night will be no more, and they will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.
