But even if we (or an angel from heaven) should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be condemned to hell!
– Galatians 1:8
This is a topic that I have written extensively about. However, acceptance of this topic is paramount to Christianity — the authority of scriptures. We have to have the Bible as the written authority to guide us in our walk, thoughts, and prayer. The Bible is the litmus test for truth. If it doesn’t agree with Scripture, then it is not truth. It is how we can test the message that a pastor preaches, the letters that the early church fathers wrote (individuals such as Ignatius of Antioch, Clement of Rome, and even Augustine of Hippo), or revelation we receive during prayer. Although other writings are good to read and can help give us a greater understanding of Scripture, we must never hold other writings as more authoritative than Scripture. This is a dangerous slope that can lead to idolatry. We take these things and compare them with Scripture. If it lines up, then it is truthful. If it does not, then we must discard it.
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. – 1 John 4:1
