Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people Colossians 3:23

I can recall a conversation my coworkers were having about the importance of recycling. The argument that my coworker gave, which I found to be an incredibly weak reason, was “I don’t recycle because most cities in the U.S. don’t recycle anyway. Sure, they have the collection trucks, but it all goes to the landfill anyway.” When I heard his reasoning, I became enraged, because this is a very self-focused line of reasoning that is dangerous to apply to any situation, and thus prompted this write-up.

To speak very colloquially, I don’t give a good golly darn what others are doing buckaroo. Guess what! Their compromised morals shouldn’t compromise yours. Just because you know that your actions are moot, that does not mean you are free from the consequences of your actions. Live a life that is above reproach and do the right thing in spite of what others may do. But why?

We should live above reproach and do the right thing despite what others may say because we are not judged by other humans, but by a higher and more perfect judge. And this judge asks of us to live and do work as if we are working to glorify the Creator God of the Universe that wills our very existence. The very being that the rocks of the earth cannot help but cry out and worship Him. Tell me this, O man, what arrogance is this that we should tell the God of the Universe: “I will not do the most God honoring thing because, should I expend the extra effort, in the end it would be pointless.” Who cares? Live unto God, not unto man. Seek the approval of God, not the approval of man. We are in the world, not of it. So, live like an ambassador of heaven, not a resident of earth.

Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me, O Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies.  Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me, O God of Israel. – Psalms 69:6
